5 of the Most In-Demand Engineering Positions of 2020

on March 13, 2020 in Engineering Candidates

It is no secret that STEM fields like engineering are experiencing a shortage of talent. That’s excellent news for job seekers as it means a variety of opportunities and higher salaries. But some engineering fields are growing at a faster rate than others.

Here are five of the most in-demand engineering positions of 2020.

Automation and Robotics Engineers

Robots are revolutionizing manufacturing, production, fulfillment, and a host of other industries, including medicine. Robots have matured from single-arm machines performing single tasks to highly advanced machines capable of doing complex tasks. As robotic technology continues to evolve rapidly, engineers are in high demand. They are involved in every aspect of design, development, testing, implementation and optimization of robots and the field is expected to grow significantly over the next ten years.

Civil Engineers

Civil engineers build and improve our country’s infrastructure and are always in demand. Civil engineering is a broad field that can include structural engineering, environmental engineering, transportation engineering and more. Through 2028, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the field to grow faster than average for other occupations.

Alternative Energy Engineers

Over the last decade, pressure has mounted to find cleaner, more sustainable ways to generate energy. As investment in research continues to grow and technologies continue to improve, the cost of alternative energy sources is decreasing. For example, solar panels are much more affordable for both businesses and homeowners today than they were 15 years ago, leading to higher demand, which then leads to even more research and technology improvements. Alternative energy engineers are in high demand to innovate and test new solutions and continue to optimize existing alternative energy sourcing and delivery like solar and wind power.

Electrical Engineers

Electrical engineering is a vast field that shows no signs of slowing in demand. Electrical engineers can work on projects as large as power grids, as small as electronic components for handheld machines and everything in between. This broad range of specializations means that electrical engineers will continue to be in high demand for the foreseeable future.

Project Engineers

In every field of engineering, there is a growing need for project leaders who can optimize processes. From project design through materials procurement to execution and delivery, project engineers are responsible for keeping things on track and on budget while maximizing efficiency, reducing waste and ensuring safety. As companies continue to face pressure to innovate while controlling costs without sacrificing safety or quality, project engineers will continue to be in high demand.
