How to Make Your IT Jobs Stand Out to Candidates

on November 25, 2021 in Hiring Advice, IT Clients

Writing IT job descriptions can feel overwhelming, especially for non-IT specialists. Fortunately, you can make your IT job postings stand out by cutting out most of the technical jargon and simply focusing on what candidates really want to know. Here are some tips.

Describe the Company

Finding the right fit is extremely important to most candidates, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. So rather than leading off your IT job descriptions with a bunch of techno-speak, talk about the company. Who founded it? How long has it been in business? What’s the primary focus? What are the values? Is it a buttoned-up traditional organization or is there a more laid-back “work hard, play hard” mentality? Is diversity a priority or is it more of an old boys’ network?

Talk About the Role

You’ll want to mention the qualifications here, but again, don’t get lost in the details. What will your new hire do all day? Is the role team-based? Is there cross-departmental collaboration? What sorts of projects do your IT people typically take on? Are there any unique perks, such as catered lunches or pool tables, or monthly outings?

Mention the Ideal Candidate

You don’t want to box yourself in here, because you may not know exactly what you want until you see it. But you should at least provide a couple of general sentences about who you’re looking for. Should that person be detail-oriented, big-picture focused, or both? Do you want someone creative and comfortable with making big decisions? Or are you looking for a more analytical type who will help you drill down into the numbers to fix potential issues?

Include the Details

Don’t forget to list the basics of the position, such as the location, standard hours, and salary range. If you offer remote work or flexible scheduling, be sure to note it. You’ll also want to provide information on standard benefits such as health insurance or a 401K.

Writing IT job descriptions doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Just remember that IT candidates are humans who want to know about the company, the position, and what you’re looking for. Keep jargon to a minimum and contain it within the Role section, and you’ll be a step ahead of the competition.
