How to Choose Between Two Engineering Job Offers

on November 15, 2019 in Engineering Candidates

Getting two engineering job offers at the same time can be a real boost to your ego. If you find yourself in this situation, take time to celebrate your success. However, when you’re done celebrating, you’ll need to choose between the two offers – a task that is never easy. How do you know the job you select will be the right one for you? If you must choose between two engineering job offers, use these tips to determine which offer to accept.

Job Descriptions

Study each job description closely and verify they each align with your expectations and the discussions you had in your interviews. If something is off, ask the hiring manager to clarify and put it in writing. Inaccurate job descriptions could be a red flag, so sort them out immediately.

Total Compensation Package

Make sure you receive offers with the exact salary and benefits packages laid out for you, as well as any additional perks. That way, you’re comparing apples to apples. Then, determine where you can give and take. Would you sacrifice some salary for a shorter commute or an excellent retirement package? Is flexibility more important than your dental plan? Know your priorities and weigh each offer accordingly.

Total Alignment

Evaluate each job against your career priorities, personal priorities and family needs. Is the job a step forward? Will it impact your work-life balance? How could it impact your family? Consider how each will impact your life over the next one, three and five years.

Company Culture

You spend more time at work than you do at home, so you should like where you are working and who you are working for. Research each company’s corporate culture to determine whether they provide an environment where you will do your best work. Salary, benefits and work-life balance mean nothing if youre unhappy at work.

Don’t Ignore Your Intuition

If you have a gut feeling about an organization, don’t ignore it. If the hiring process gave you pause, it could be a sign of disorganization at the company. If you had nothing but good feelings and felt your interviewers were open and transparent, it could be a sign of a great organization. You may have a sense that one organization is a better fit than the other, and that sense is worth exploring.
