How to Improve Cybersecurity for Remote Employees
With millions of Americans working from home, cybersecurity has become a top priority for employers. Data breaches have always been a threat, but with employees working outside the office, and many on their own devices, threats have multiplied. It’s never too late to get risks under control to protect company and customer data.
Improve Cybersecurity for Remote Employees
Keep Network Security Updated
Hopefully, updating network security is a regular occurrence, but now is the time to make it non-negotiable for all devices to have the most recent security patches and upgrades. Regularly shore up operating systems, antivirus and antimalware programs, routers, etc. These are your first line of defense against threats and should always be kept up-to-date.
Set Up Multifactor Authentication
Passwords are broken all the time, and it’s a matter of when not if your employees’ passwords will become vulnerable. It’s important to require all users to change passwords at least once a month, but that won’t be enough. Multifactor authentication adds an additional layer of protection.
Reinforce Confidentiality
Your team would never leave confidential information up on their screens when they walked away from their computers in the office and they wouldn’t throw papers into the garbage that need to be shredded. At home, however, it’s easy to be lax. It’s important to remind every employee of the importance of confidentiality and following the same protocols for protecting information.
Run Phishing Drills
Email phishing scams get more sophisticated every day and it only takes one employee a second of not paying attention to put the entire network at risk. Work with your tech team to run phishing drills where a fake phishing email is sent out to all employees. If employees click the link, they will receive a message reminding them that they must follow proper protocols. Keep track of how many people click the link and send out stats after each drill to reinforce the importance of verifying emails before clicking anything.
